What's the Price of 1 Ton 2014-2015

PostBy: KingCoal918 On: Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:21 am

The 2013-14 topic has gone stale and locked.

Can it be updated?

Wondering how this drop in oil prices may be affecting pricing, particularly in New England. I imagine it probably won't until next year since dealers have already made their trips to the breakers to stockpile this year.

Also wondering if anyone has been buying Reading this season and if the problem they had with excess fines (~5lb/40lb) in the bagged nut has been eliminated.

The Reading I have been buying is privately bagged so no problem with fines. Two years ago not cleaned enough so very dusty. This year very clean but also very dry which is nice but slightly dusty when poured from bag to scuttle.
When poured into stove less dust than others. Almost nothing.
Both Kimmell and Blaschak are decent coals, but I like the Reading better. Runs hotter at same air setting and ash is slightly less. White ash.

Thanks Franco.

Good to hear it's better, at least from different bagger.

Hopefully Reading got the equipment tuned correctly at their facility.

So I just called a coal supplier in Chambersburg, PA. $210 ton picked up. Ad said all sizes. All he had was pea and nut. Asked Red or white ash? He replied, "I don't know I'm colorblind as he!!". When asked where it comes from he said "Chambersburg". But he assured me it was "really good and has alot of BTUs in it"... :o

We got 7.85 tons of rice from Superior in Oct.,it was $170/ton,we had a local farmer haul it for us,total per ton came to $184. We just picked up some Reading coal from a local coal yard for $220/ton, we got 600# of pea-nut mix & 180# of rice that we shoveled into buckets & then they charged us $11/100#. He also will deliver 4 tons here for $220/ton since we are only 2 miles away from their yard.He also has Superior coal @ about $10/ton less than the Reading.

I paid $290/ton for 3 tons of bagged Reading rice delivered. Haven't burnt much of it yet as my stove was just recently installed. I'm a rookie coal burner but it seems fine to me. It's damp but not ridiculously so and there doesn't seem to be a lot of fines.

I got 1 ton of Blakshak bagged for $270/ton from local supplier on Saturday. Price has not changed since September. Thus far I have paid $810 for coal to heat this year. WAY cheaper than oil or propane.

Oil is getting competitive again. Just got 125 gallons of No. 2 dyed diesel delivered today for $2.47/ gal. We used ~400 gallons, and spent all of $1500 for oil last heating season.

That said, it's always cooler in the house (~66°) than it is in the shop (~73°) that I heat with free coal.

I guess I don't understand "free coal". Could you explain? Jerry
