If somebody said to you, "I will sell you a VC Vigilant coal stove for $150. It has some chips in the enamel and needs a door glass." What would you say?
This would be used purely for supplemental heat and butt warming.

artbaldoni, Do you know what model it is or what year it was made? Does it have a single separate ash pan door below the ash lip that is hinged on your left? This would identify it as the newer revisions of the venerable Vigilant model.

Sorry. I typed a reply but I guess I didn't post it.
It has no seperate ash door so I assume early model.
Waiting for a pic of nameplate.

Yup, that's a coal stove. If the swing out ash door and pan is missing they can be purchased...could be the reason for the great price.

You need a pane of glass, the door looks good.

That's what I thought. Do you have any experience with touch up on the enamel? This has some good sized chips. I see there is touch up paint available.michaelanthony wrote:Yup, that's a coal stove. Sorry I don't, my stove is black cast iron. Like any touch up paint, (auto, bath tub etc.), regardless how good it comes out you are usually the only one to know where the spots areartbaldoni wrote:That's what I thought. Personally I would leave the chips, they would give me a reason to brag why it was such a deal. If it was 110 yrs old it would be called character.

Doesn't appear to be a model II 2310. The ash lip is larger than a II 2310's. My guess is it the preceding model where the ash pan was directly below the grate just inside the double doors and hiding behind the plate below the fettel.

This is likely the multi fuel, which burns coal beautifully! Ash pan is inside the double doors, and we love ours! Buy it!
