While tending the stove part of my routine is to knife between the grates and clear ash from the grill. While clearing the grill I tend to get a lot of ash that drops down to the ash lip below the loading doors. I sweep it with a small dust pan and brush but it stirs up some light ash dust which I see going up the stove on the heat currents.

I remembered William Sherrick talking about taking a cookie sheet and filling it with sand and kept under the stove to catch hot coals if they bounce out of the stove during tending. It will keep your hardwood floor from getting "freckles." I got a small aluminum roasting pan because they were considerable cheaper than a cookie sheet.

I decided to see if it would fit under the edge of the grill to catch the errant ash while I am clearing the ash from the grill.

It worked GREAT!!! The end of the aluminum roaster pan fits almost exactly under the grill. It cut way down on the amount of ash I have to get up after tending. I just take the pan, empty it into the ash pan and close it up. The pan then stores very neatly under the stove.

Good find Rev.

I keep one of those half-sheet cookie baking pans on the oven floor. Perfect for catching any spills from bubbling-over casseroles.

I use long BBQ tongs for picking up hot coals, or any unburned coal that makes it to the ash pan so it can be put back in the firebox to finish burning.

The pot holders for handling hot stove door handles.

And, the long probe digital meat thermometer sometimes gets used for checking flue gas temps.

Just don't let Momma catch you borrowing too much kitchen stuff. :D

One thing I hated from my Vigll was the dust and ash coming out when opening the front doors...
So I went for the full solution and the stove has never been so clean to use...
Plus, the front 1/2" steel plate, (in the back of the deco. tiles) replacing the horizontal bars avoid the combustion air to by-pass the coal bed by the horizontal bars route.. Combution air loves the easiest route .
And I'm not good with the kitchen Tools :) :D
