Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: harman

I called out to direnzo's yesterday ( 12-26-14 ) and got a price ( 190/ton ) for rice coal. The lady on the phone said they had plenty in stock and they were open until noon on Saturday. I drove out this morning the very nice helpful lady in the office pointed me to the scale and told me how their loading process went. Got on the scale, a man came out and asked if I'm local and if It was my first time there. I told him yes, he then tells me he don't have enough to go around and wouldn't sell me 2 tons. Has anyone else have this happen ever??? So I left and south Tamaqua was happy to take my business. I have heard good things about Direnzo but really doubt I will try to spend money there again.

I think that is the first time I heard anything bad about them. I was going to give them a try the next time I needed coal but maybe I will just keeping going to RR coal. I never had a problem there and they don't ask where I am from. Why would it matter where you came from and if you had been there before? Is there rice coal in such low supply they are keeping it for the local people?

I was there in November and bought 3.5 tons of rice. No volume restrictions then and everyone was very nice. I will say I called before I left home to verify that it would be no problem. If I had happen what happened to you I would have insisted they sell me the 2 tons since you were told on the phone there was plenty and no mention of restrictions. I plan to go there again soon for another load and will of course call first to verify any restrictions. Just to be clear, are you a local?

I have been there several times and everyone was friendly and helpful and their coal is high quality. That said there could have been a miscommunication, it just sounds unusual.

Did you tell him you had already called ahead and spoken with someone in the office?

Yes I'm local and yes I told them I called. I don't know what the issue was but the south Tamaqua Coal is burning great. High BTU and low ash had to turn the feed rate way down and cut the air back by half. My stove temp doubled with the settings from the mammoth coal.

Sounds like he got it at Mammoth Materials outside Minersville Pa.

If your buying coal in the middle of the season especially over Christmas/New Years holiday it's good to call ahead and make sure they are number one open, number two have the size you need, and three that they will sell it to you. You did all three and still got told no when you showed up. Bad customer relations if I do say so myself. Too many suppliers in this area to pull stunts like that.

I decided to buy 100 gallons of "back up" heating oil using a surprise gift check we got. I called four suppliers that told me no that they were only selling to existing customers. I finally called one of the new start-up companies that stapled signs up on the major highways. They were hungry and more than happy to sell me oil and even offered a senior citizens 3 cents a gallon discount if I qualified. I qualified! Told em I was going to only get 100 gallons but come on out and fill it up. That 147 gallon purchase will last us three years. Unless it's an emergency we only use the oil boiler to heat DHW.

That oil company now has a new customer that will recommend them to others.

The other four, well move on there's nothing to see here.

I wouldn't let that stop me from returning. I'd call next time and explain what happened, and this time make sure they will sell you coal. Why miss out on good clean coal, after all if we didn't go to every place that made at least one mistake, where would we shop. It happens to the best of them.

If the "substitute" place he got coal from has good coal, why not patronize them from here on,they are most likely lower priced than Direnzo anyway.

Yes! Please everyone buy your coal from the substitute place. That way when I go to Direnzos they will have plenty! :D ;)

 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thanks for that suggestion ,CK , I will go to places closer to me & hopefully that will allow you to load up at Direnzo. Did you know that when you drive on Interstate 81,when you get to the I 78 merge,if you were to turn a hard right & drive thru the fields for 1.5 miles you would end up in our driveway ?
