Joe,
The Herald "purred" all day at 250* on the barrel. I think that's the 'Cat's meow'!
Tom,
No rails, just an Oak with a back pipe.
Scott,
I've only burnt black rocks in this for 24 hours, but those 'tri-angleuar grates' take the work out of shaking. If that keeps happening, I found "Easy Street"!!!
Cheers

Wow that looks great. I haven't lit mine yet its in an upstairs bedroom. Gonna have to go upstairs and see how it runs. You got me motivated to bring up a bucket of coal.
Heres some pictures of the Herald 14 with a Glenwood 116 back pipe

Skip, you have the perfect house for all those stoves! That house has to be huge, and how many chimneys does it have?

The stoves look awesome! Love that backer plate, what is it made of? Would be pretty heavy if cast iron, I am guessing pressed tin?

D , she did use the afternoon sun. thanks for pointing that out. Wilson

Today, Nov 1st, was a good day for a road trip to see our friend 'Wilson' perform his magic on a gear that I "boogered". Also, I really wanted to see the Herald he restored. Man, what a beauty! And, upon arriving, I see a 1966 Chevy, panel delivery, on his roll-back, ramp truck. Real nice-West coast- NO RUST! What a 'toy box' this guy has! Anyway, no Wilson. I'm walking around calling out Wilson."Over here"! If you've been to Wilson's, "Over here" ain't gonna help you! He's working on a Glenwood Oak 50 (FIFTY), but you can't see him. I've seen Large-XL-XXL, but this heater is the 'elephant in the room'! Whoa! Big and beautiful! If any of you need to heat a 'one room dance hall', Wilson has it.

A beautiful day, Thank you, Wilson

P.S.(Paul) I know, no pics didn't happen. The camera crew(Lillian) stayed home, and I'm not 'smart enough' for a 'smart phone'. Maybe Wilson can post a pic when it's completed.
Cheers

Always a treat to visit Wilson. I don't know how he ever gets to accomplish anything with all the visitors, and stories. But, "Hey" you only live once...right? :)

Yes, Joe. The amount of knowledge Wilson has, you will never ever be able to replace. Amazing.
I've said to the misses." If we lived closer, I'd be building chimneys!" It's a long ride, but a very enjoyable visit.
Cheers

Simply amazing what all he does there and with such great skill and finesse.

Mornin',
We are on the bad side of "O"(-4 below zero) this morning, it's cold!
Last season, I burnt 'nut' size in the Herald. This year, I started mixing, nut & stove, and have started using all 'stove' size in the Herald. Clean burn, no bridging, no clinkers. I am amazed at the performance of this Herald.
Wilson sold me a 'keeper' with this Herald. Thank you, Wilson.

? for 'scalabro': Does the Crawford burn better on 'stove' size?

Cheers

Yes DF the C40 loves stove coal! If I could get accurately sized nut that was clean I could get a slightly longer burn, but since I've been having such good fortune with LA stove size, I can't complain. These old ladies seem to really like big rocks :D

I have always tended the Herald on a 12 hour schedule. The only difference is less primary air burning 'stove' size. I run it at 350*, and burning 12 hours is not a problem. Stay warm, coal lovers!!!
