Welcome NJ to the coal forum. I have a VC 2310 that was designed for coal and I am not familiar with the conversion kit for the resolute. However we have a lot of folks on the forum and some one will chime in before long. It was a LONG night for some on here but they will be in.

Try using the search box in the upper right corner and type in Vermont Casting Resolute and see what comes up. That will be some good reading until others show up.

Air is probably bypassing the coal bed. It is my understanding that the inner conversion parts have to be sealed with furnace cement to prevent air from going around the coal grates.

Open the doors or door and any gap below the grates that could allow air through around the grates has to be sealed. You could stuff some fiberglass to test. which could be done hot.

Are you filling the stove with coal? A picture of the stove ready for the overnight burn will help. I use a Vigilant 2310 and can not see the back of the stove through the doors...it's all coal!
