Hand Fed Coal Stove: Ds 1600

Post by Keystonepe » Thu. Jan. 01, 2015 12:18 pm

1900 stone farm house remodeled and insulated.... I bought a DS 1600 hand fire coal. I put it in the basement. Goes approximately 35-40 ft up to end of chimney 6in flu for first 6 or so feet then into 8x8 clay. No chimney cap. I put baro on this year it helped out on windy days. Average 8-10 hrs on 40#. So I'm burning 80-120 day. Usually fill morning, evening and before bed. Today 20 degree day house is 64. Stove at 550-600. Exhaust is 300-350. How do I make this better total sq ft of house heated is about 2100 3 floors.....I use nut and stove coal

What is your baro set at? Exhaust seems kinda high at those temps. Lot of heat seems to be going up chimney. Might need to add manual pipe damper before the baro.

Some caution about the mpd above the baro, if the mpd above the baro is closed too much for any reason, exhaust gases can back up into the living space!

Yes ty that was only added as safety for flu fire it's never used only in case I burnt some wood and had failure or fire

If you are burning wood, pull and cap the baro damper. The creosote will cling to the damper and make it useless and if you have a chimney fire..... the baro damper will feed it oxygen.

Old stone foundation will soak up a lot of heat. If chimney is located interior of house it will help heat upstairs and high stack temperature will still help heat house.

Perhaps the stove could be enclosed in a smaller room that is insulated and still get circulation to upstairs.

Your stove will do a great job of heating the basement, but anything beyond that is questionable. The foundation will absorb a lot of heat, and what's left will not make it upstairs without cold air returns.

I just did smoke test. 3 returns on stove side do up draft. Two returns on opposite side are down draft basement door has both up and down. Second floor bedroom has down draft to basement all natural flow. Was so much coal and why a cold house!! Kinda frustrated

Keystonepe, Welcome to the forum. When you add coal to your stove, are you filling it full,as in to the top of the firebricks ? If you are only putting 40# in at a time & doing that 3 times/day + mixing stove size coal in ,your stove is responding to the strong draft going strait thru that shallow coal bed & there goes the heat out the stack into the ozone layer.
