One nice thing about a small town is being a regular at the local shops, I happen to love my local True Value store and after 6 1/2 yrs. I am no longer a flatlander or new guy, didn't take that long anyway. when I first moved to town folks would stop talking and gave me a nod, now they get louder and extend there hand and ask about the family, work, or sports.
Best of all the owner will come over and tell me about the up coming specials and in some cases put things aside if asked. Well this month I was told about the new L.E.D. bulbs and the instore rebate. The last time they had them they sold out in a couple hours and this time I was there and ready! The price was $14 and change for 2 bulbs, with the instore rebate they were $1.98 for 2, .99 cents apiece. I bought 3 pks to try and boy I'm lovin'em. The watts used is 9.something for 60 watts of light, they are brighter than my old 60w incandescent and cfl of the same rating. Tomorrow I'm going back for 10 more pks, they have 40w and 60w. It states on the packaging that will last 22.4 years  I put 3 in the bathroom as the fixture over the vanity required 3, need sunglasses to pee!...sunscreen too

Yeah the LED lights are pretty impressive. I run one 24/7 in the basement to illuminate my monitoring station for the furnace. It uses something silly like 7 watts and is extremely bright! 8-)

When we remodeled our kitchen I installed all LED lighting. The rest of the house is mostly changed to LED from incandescent lamps now too. I never got into the CFL thing. They take forever to warm up and don't even think about using them outdoors in the cold.
We've gotten some pretty good deals on LED lamps from Costco. It's a 60+ mile drive to go there but we make it worth while when we go.

I bought some "Cree" brand LED's on ebay and have been very happy with them. My dining room is in the center of the house, so there is minimal daylight. The 5 bulb fixture seems to be on all the time, and it went from 300 watts total to 50 watts total. I tried the same bulbs in a few lamps on a dimmer switch and noticed some flickering at low output levels, so for now I'm sticking with incandescent in that application.

I think CFL's are also killed by frequent on/off cycles. I bought a 10 pack of them about 5 years ago. 6 went in the bathroom, 4 in the basement. 3 of the ones in the bathroom died within a year. The 4 in the basement are still working fine. I have another CFL that is huge, must be intended to replace a 150 watt incandescent. It was in the milk-house at the farm and on 24/7 for many years. I put it in the basement near the EFM and it is still working fine.

I agree, the on/off cycles do shorten the life of a CFL. Also, when a CFL is outdoors and energized at all times they have no issues with light output, regardless of temperature.
