Nice!jridings wrote:The switch on the hopper is for the auger. I open the valve, turn the switch on, take care of ashes and wait another 5 minutes maybe until its almost full then close the valve and allow tube to empty. Never actually timed it. It is slower than the bucket method, but having no dust is worth the wait.

I say, WOW! again!jridings wrote:I used gear reduction by using a heavy duty garage door opener mechanism. It reduces motor speed of 1750rpm down to 630rpm. Also its a friction disc stule drive for protection in case of binding. At the intake end I made a valve to shut off coal supply into auger to be able to empty tube so moist coal wouldnt rust out auger flighting. And no dust with the discharge sealed to hopper.
Now that is the right way to do a bin to hopper auger. Nice heavy duty drive system that is level rather than on the feed pipe angle. A shut-off for the coal feed in the bin. A friction disc to act as a safety for when something gets jammed in the auger (and it will). A nice dust cover for the hopper.
There is only one improvement I can think of. If you used a Variable Frequency Drive motor you could set the auger feed rate to match the stoker feed rate. By doing this, you could wire the auger to run when the stoker runs and never have to fill the hopper again.
WOW!

Thanks for the great feedback everyone, im glad you all like it! Don, I did think about wiring in motor to operate while stoker operates however I still have ashes to empty. So maybe when I fab an ash auger system to remove ash then I could synchronize each component for an almost independant coal boiler! I love this new hobby!

Then all you would need to do is have the boiler call your coal supplier when the bin gets low!jridings wrote:Thanks for the great feedback everyone, im glad you all like it!
