Although I would like to think I went to the Freetown University for coal burning (KISS), curiosity got the better part of me.
I posted this also in the Coal Price, Coal Quality, Coal dealer forum also in reference to my thoughts on my experience with
Susquehanna/ Hudson nut coal I'm burning this year. I figure I would just throw the numbers out here as a reference for others,
good or bad. Here's the post:
I'm still doing fine with my bulk delivery. Fines are not bad at all and the heat produced is sufficient.
I was curious as to the amount of ash produced and decided to experiment. Not exactly highly scientific, but I checked the ash by weight.
I would weigh the ash as I took it out, then re-weigh myself on the scale with the empty ash pan as I came back in. Same thing for loading
the stove as I would weigh myself with the empty scoop, then re-weigh myself on the way back in with a scoop of coal.
I just used a digital stand on scale that would measure to the 1/2 lb.
The first time was during a warmer stretch loading twice a day for nine days.
I got: 12% ash on 5 lbs ash / 42 lbs coal per day.
The second time was during this recent colder stretch loading twice a day for ten days.
I got: 11% ash on 6 lbs ash / 54 lbs coal per day.
Not to start a debate or if my method is correct, I'm just throwing this out there.
Thanks, Kevin

I've been measuring my ash weight too. You'll get a higher degree of accuracy by measuring several days worth and then doing the math. I do 8-10 days worth. Check this thread..

Well that's what I stated, nine days on the warm stretch, ten days on the colder stretch. I just thought I would check it as I thoughtLightning wrote:Chronicles of the Clayton

I was dumping a lot of ash and had never really looked into it. By the way I was told by a manger at the company that the coal was running
about 10% ash. Close enough.
