I am returning to my Red Cross Garnet #48
I was sold a stove that was full of plastic  and this is what happened when I lit it. Now I need to replace every single window. So the question is as the windows are mostly 4x6” the question is where? (Ashville Mica looks to be very expensive). This is the last step in the restore and I am anxious to get it going. Does anyone know Wilsons source, I can't seem to reach him.

How about

http://www.mcmaster.com/#mica-sheets/=vhdt2p

So which grade? and how do I seal around the windows (micro gasket?). Is there another source? If so which grade?

Thx

Simon

I don't think they were sealed at all originally.

Before you get all, Bob Villa on me I think we need to make arrangements for a visit on my part. I think I want to look this stove over really well before you get to gobbing the spackle all over it.

Beautiful stove
It used to be keeping up with the Kardasians, now it's keeping up with Mr. Kingpin. :D

This is what the stove will look like once the mica is in. Hand painted by yours truly, I could not afford nickeling. Double heater (brilliant venturi design) with magazine. I am getting Sir William to bless it (or otherwise) and BTW Franco, thx no spackling! Now I am getting charged up about this one again. The Jotul 507 gives a perspective on size. This is my favorite Red Cross stove and it is way more substantial than the Barnstable Red Cross Ensign.
Cumerbund and top hat and tails are on order for Williams visit. I will try not to get horse poop over them before he arrives. :D

What paint and color is that?.
Is there any noticeable difference in heat output with stoves with a steel/cast barrel versus mica windows?.
When the lights are off or turned down, that stove probably really lights up a room with a full pot. Real purdy stove.

....oh, and while you are at it, try to keep the horse poop off of the guest(s) as well. It's always in bad taste to greet your guests with "hellz bellz, ya got some on ya". toothy

The paint is ultra high heat auto paint aerosol. The black inlay is achieved by spraying the the gold (many light coats) and once really hard and dry, light black spray into the relief and wipe over while still wet. The $50 stove renickel.

The mica stoves throw out the heat just fine but according to Emory they just need more maintenance. I would love to get some candle coal, throw in a few lumps, lights out and listen to my Victrola records. ;)

Nice job on the paint! The black in the recessed designs helps to bring out the detail...good eye.

God knows what they glued the top plastic in with but it was a nightmare to remove and clean up. I am not a stove restorer and the last time I had this much fun was when I caught my foot in the washing machine but I suppose it gets better.

Today I ordered 25 4"x4" windows, 20 5"x4" and 6 4"x 3"... ouchy. I have no idea on delivery yet. When I start in earnest photos are a promise. I have tried a couple of bits of mica that Wilson gave me and it seems they will seal just fine (thx franco). Doors appear to be tight and well fitting ..... and so we lumber on. I should do a Pierre style (Sunnyside) strip down and rebuild but I know it would never get back together again, I just don't have his skills or patience. I am determined this will be a burner first and garage ornament last, too many members have made that mistake. I would like to find genuine old pipe to connect the top of the double heater outlet to the register above but I suppose Lowes c rappola stuff will do and I could paint it gold like the stove. Sorry for the early morning ramblings.

I hope your repairs work out for you and you can enjoy the stove soon! It's a pretty stove. Jerry

,, and my inspiration is JJ in a land far far away. I was stunned by your Sunburst rebuild but it would frighten me to use it on a regular basis. I am trying to keep my stove simple and cheap. With a 16" fire pot I think it will be a CH unit for the front of the house.
