The best depiction of the last days is the German film "Downfall". Very well done.theo wrote:Finished out his last days here,,,, http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-brief-lux ... id=U146DHP

I'll Definitely Go With You On That One,Franco !! I had thought that the Russians had destroyed most of that Bunker Complex after going through it for anything usable after they took Berlin. I had seen a Documentary some time ago where it was discovered quite a bit of the damned thing was still in existence. As the Air Campaign took it's Toll on the Surface, the Nazi's went Gangbusters on a Total War Effort Underground. In Some Respects, their War Production Effort actually rose after they Moled-Out. When the Flying Fortresses,Liberators and Lancasters(All Heavy Four-Engine Long Range Bombers) couldn't reach far enough Underground,(There were only so many British"Tall Boy Bunker-Buster Bombs to go after so may Targets) the Nazi's were running short of Resources and the means to safely transport them to their Underground Facillities. It was said that on one Initial Occasion,Herman Goering had exited a building, looked up,and had seen P-51 Mustangs and Heavy Bombers on approach to Berlin. He was heard to say at that point that the War was lost. The Air Campaign,Coupled With Every Espionage,Inside Resistance and Ground War Effort made Hitler a Prisoner in The Bunker that he would finally meet his End....Thank God....

So this is where the doubles decoyed everybody. Now for the big cigar you must reveal where he hid in Argentina.
NOTHING is what it seems even with Hitler

Interesting story. I just watched the National Geographic documentary about Hitler's GI Death Camp earlier this week. On Netflix, if anyone would like to watch it.

I Dunno,Honestly !..... I've always felt that if anyone would've gotten that Megalomaniac out of Berlin,it would've been a toss-up between Otto Skorzeny,or Hanna Reitsch. Both were amazing in what they could do in a Feissler-Storch STOL High Wing Aircraft. It was the Grand-Daddy of Today's Short Take-Off and Landing Technology. Skorzeny yanked Mussolini out of an Allied Mountain-Top Prison, and Hanna Reitsch flew into Berlin during the last days by landing and taking back-off on one of the cleared Bergerstrasse's. Supposedly Hitler wouldn't go with her to go hole up in the Eagle's Nest to make a Last Stand with the rest of the SS Scrap-pile in Bavaria....The Jury's always out with a guy like Adolph Hitler.....When You Think About It,The Rotten SOB somewhat got what he wanted, namely,We're still talking about him today........

I'm not so sure about getting what he wanted. As a general observation, there are two types of people that commit suicide:
1. Those that have mental issues that are not corrected...through medication or psychiatrist's because some people truly do have issues
2. Those that are overly arrogant and in which suicide is basically the ultimate temper-tantrum for not getting their way. I would put Hitler and some of his Crummies in this camp. For those in this area, the bible describes this as the ultimate shame.
Yes we still might be talking about the guy, but what was suppose to be a thousand year reign did not even last a decade. That is a pretty poor prediction...not to mention arrogance.

Later in the war, the Germans had figured out how to keep the tall boy bunker busting type bombs from busting their bunkers. The proof is their sub pens in France survived direct hits. They built their bunkers in layers with air gaps, or sand layers in between thick layers of reinforced concrete. The gaps dissipated the energy breaking through the first layer out sideways before it could break through the next layer of reinforced concrete.
That technique of building layers of protection instead of one thick layer was used on battle ships, bullet proof glass. It's still used on tank armor, armored glass, and bullet-proof vests today.
What they couldn't do was make airplanes and well trained pilots fast enough to keep up with their losses. By D-day their air force was mostly destroyed. When they lost control of the skys, they lost the war.
A guy I worked with was a ground mechanic in the Army Air Corp. He was sent into Germany right behind the lead troops as part of a group to get captured air fields quickly back in operation for our side. He said the German aircraft and equipment they captured were built far better than ours, but taking that much care in building them only served to slow their production.

It is interesting to note, that in regards to shipbuilding, that sort of technology to defeat munitions is no longer used. I am not about to describe how we do defeat this threat today on warships for obvious reasons, but will say I have seen the video of ballistic missile testing and am proud to say our welding was able to survive quite the blast using the new methods!
In fact it is interesting to watch the slow motion video of ships enduring survivability testing of depth charges placed around a ship. Watching a 500 foot ship twist and flex and yet survive unscathed is amazing really. I am sure the sailors aboard our ships are equally thankful.

The History of Bunker Design is quite Interesting,to say the least. When You study on how Hitler's Bunker was built, how the Nazi's tried to shield it's creation from Aerial View, let alone Espionage,it was a Monumental Effort..........

The best biography of Hitler was by John Toland in two volumes.coalnewbie wrote:Tongue in cheek as the guy was a monster but I do go for the HB story. It was just too easy.I find it hard to believe you take this stuff seriously
Hitler was sincere in his obsessions and when all was lost there was only one course left for him as suicide. He had threatened that several times in his career when he did not get his way. He had many chances to leave Berlin but always turned then down. Suicide fits his personality, escape does not. Suicide was in the air in the last days and even his secretaries considered it.
