Hi guys. its been a long time, sorry.. ive been fighting cancer for almost a year non and it looks like I may be on the down hill slide now :( BUT im still not giving up without a fight,,,, im still burning coal all winter. but I have to hire somebody to shovel it from the trailer to the ben I store it in, after that I can handle the rest :)

ANYWAY

i cant remember what was best black smoke or yellowish when first firing up. im using some "cheaper" Bituminous this year as money is short, it seems to burn good and heat is good but last year from the other supplier the smoke at start up or load up was black as the coal. I remember reading here about what the color meant but cant remember now :( :(

thanks guys be safe out there

Can't help with the smoke color but put up a good fight and hope you win!. intuitively and had to guess would pick yellow is a hotter fire than black and less starved for oxygen and seems like more soot and less fire but a guess at best. Hang in there!

I wish you the best in your fight my friend !

Yellow , black , it all kinda comes out with bit until the coal cokes . The thick yellow smoke always rolled off when I didn't have enough secondary air until those flues in my WM stove lit the volatiles and then it was black smoke for a little while until it coked . I hope that helps I haven't burned bit in a little while . Wait for the guys with a better grasp on it to answer .

I wish you the best in your fight, and will think positive thoughts every day for you to win this fight.

When I have black smoke on the stack, and I look in the stove I see there allso a lot of smoke and less flames.
At the other hand when I have lot of flames in de stove I have a light grey smoke on the stack.
And the stove burns the refractory clean.
