this spring I will be dismantling my laurel for sandblasting and resealing I would like to have the finial and top trim ring nickeled again the rest I have been able to clean up enough to satisfy me however the other 2 pieces have 0 nickel left to polish... is there a at home kit worth trying or should I just spend the money and have them done by someone with a tank? it wont ever be a museum piece I plan on using this stove till its not repairable. I have a guy local to me but he don't want to do it because its not a new surface and don't want to deal with the pits..
is there a good plater in New England that's reasonable and what kind of money and I looking at for have these 2 pieces done?

Where are you located? ...no ones gonna steal ya!

Be very careful with "Sandblasting"

Parts that are to be Nickled they can be easily damaged by harsh and excessive stripping methods.

When done properly, the parts are ...

stripped
polished/buffed
chemically cleaned
copper plated
imperfections filled
polished/buffed
chemically cleaned
copper plated
(repeat filling if necessary)
polished/buffed
chemically cleaned
nickle plated
polished/buffed

Some shops will not go to all this effort but the end result is far superior to lesser shops.

There is a shop in Holyoke Massachusettes that does work to this level but be prepared to pay, because when you get nickle done, you really do get what you pay for.

There are "home" nickel plating kits, but for doing a few pieces, the expense of a kit is no savings. The kits are not complete, ready to go when they arrive. By the time you buy everything you need to do good nickel plating, it can run into the hundreds. I know because I have one of the better kits.

And, it will cost you extra because the kits don't come ready to plate such large pieces as a bonnet and top ring. You'd have to buy several kits worth of chemicals to get enough to do pieces that large. And big pieces like that you should have a big power supply. So your looking at around $500.00 to $800.00 by the time you buy everything you need.

Plus, the learning curve is steep and it's likely you won't get good results the first few times. Then your having to strip the part completely and start all over again.

I think you'd be better off putting your money toward having a professional shop do the nickel.

Chrome Black Lake in Province of Québec make real nice plating jobs. Very nice peoples and they know what they do...
Plus, with the actual low rated Canadian money V/S USA money, the price could be good.

Do you have a name? My father-in-law lives in Lawrence so that's doable for me.

D & S CUSTOM METAL RESTORATION

Mickey DuPuis, 102 Cabot St 111
Holyoke, MA 01040-6074
413-533-7770
[email protected]

Expensive but you will not be dissappointed.

Don't bother calling and asking questions, just plan to bring all your pieces when you go and have your "interview" with Mickey. Lol! Mickey does very high end restoration plating. A lot of his work is on cars that have won Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. Also his work is done in a "Queue" so depending on the workload at the time, it may take longer than you would think.

He's going to do the restoration plating on the PP Stewart 14 I'm building and maybe a couple pieces on my Crawford 40 :)
