I would pipe the bypass between the supply header, and the unused return port on the boiler. This will act as an "equalizer" loop and prevent stratification in the boiler when the circulator is not running. If you just close that ball valve, you will get stratification in the boiler when it sits idle.

Back on track. Thanks Rob!

Tape then dope, or dope then tape?
I know there are many types of teflon tape for different purposes.
I believe all I have is cheap tape and good dope.

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
I've re-done my threaded plumbing quite a few times. All I have is the cheap H.D. tape and dope. The fool proof way of getting a leak free seal is, 3 or so wraps of tape, then the pipe dope goes right over the tape. This gets the dope deep down into the female part of the threads.
I have not tried this with copper, just iron, steel and brass. I have only run into 2 or 3 leaks using this method and they were very minor and sealed up when boiler sealer/treatment was added.

3-4 wraps of tape and then a coating of dope. Blue Monster and Oatey make really good tape. GRRIP pipe dope is what I like. 0 leaks since I started using it.

Got a lot done today, next is the tie in. Any suggestions on attaching the supply of the coal boiler to the return of the propane? I was thinking above, and have the circulators both run at the same time.
Interested in where it should go and why!
