Hello
I am new to coal I live in central ohio and heating a 2200 sqf cape style house and a 900 sqf garage both are well insulated the garage has in floor heat with t stat set at 50 the house is forced air propane right now I have a 120000 BTU outside wood gasifer and want to go to coal I bought a used Harman sf 160 to install this spring but after a lot of reading on here I think a stoker is the way to go so my question is I found a used coal gun s260 but I think it might be over kill for what I am heating do you guys think I would have problems with it idling to long or should I just buy a new 130 thanks for your time

Stoker Coal Boiler: Axeman Anderson 260M
Coal Size/Type: Pea

I have a 2200' house and heating it with an Axeman 260, yes it is a little oversized. :) But at least I'm ready for the next ice age! It just loafs most of the time, but burns the same amount as the hand fired (80000BTU) it replaced so I would think it isn't pigging up my coal. The hand fired would average about 2-3 weeks downtime due to firebrick and grate issues. Runs more, burns the same amount. I can live with it.

I heat just under 3,000 Sq ft. with an Axeman Anderson 260M. This is with steam. The boiler idles quite a bit, and puts steam to the radiators quick. I've even took all the pins out of the timer as it's not needed. For your needs, the AA 260 is overkill indeed. Even for my needs, the AA 260 seems to be overkill lol. I might purchase an AA 130 to hook it up and see if it would heat the house (which I think it would have no problem doing as it meets the requirement for my installed radiation plus piping losses)....but that might be a future project.

There are some AA 130's for sale, and also some AHS 130 coal gun's. You really should conduct a heat load calculation for your home. This way you will see exactly what you'll need to heat everything. Ensure you adjust for the lowest temperature, and piping losses. There are plenty of free heat loss calculators on line.

An over sized boiler will waste fuel. So ensure you have the right size boiler for the job.
