How many of you with an Axeman Anderson (or other coal guns) use rice or buckwheat or nut. I know Pea is advised but in the hinter regions it is not easily available. If you have any comments as to the why or why not I'm curious too.

I'm using rice without issue, im curious if it limits my maximum BTU output or has problems keeping an idle fire in the off peak months.

Pea if available, NEVER Nut, buck frequently and rice when nothing else is available. No question that Pea burns the best, and that was the design intent, however it will burn smaller sizes with some difficulty.

Nut turns an Axeman into a hand fired in a hurry. I have run range coal through mine with no real issues. I did however have to pick out four nut chunks from the auger this year. They do get jammed in it but went two more years before it was a problem.

Never wanted to try the nut, but, were it not for having the Amish around the pea coal supply would be mighty scarce.
