This is my third winter heating with this beast and have not had any other issues with the stove. A few times when it was -5 or so it would be a degree or two off in the morning but quickly caught back up when the sun hit the house. Last night was 5deg and very windy. When I checked in the morning it was 67deg in the house and the thermostat is set to 72deg. It is now 3:00pm and I'm still not back up to temp with a calmer wind and temps in the upper twenties. The fire is burning full steam however the air coming from the registers doesn't seem as warm as it normally would be. I have not changed any of the setting from year to year. The only change I made was the coal I use. I switched from North Tamaqua Coal Pockets to Lehigh Anthracite. The only real difference I have noticed with that is that I used to get a solid two day burn maybe more to just barely making it two days on a hopper of coal. Here is my setup.

Thermostat upstairs
CFT 5
FSA
Min 5
Max 46 ( much more and it wants to run burning coal off the end of the grate)
Thermostat set at 71deg for both day and night
The burning coal is within an inch or two from the end.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Steve

If this is the third year you may be seeing the fines build up under the grate if it has never been cleaned. See the tips and tricks as a sticky in this section. There is a gasket on the back of the grate that is very important as well that is shown there.

Clean the inside of the fire chamber with a wire brush too.. fly ash accumulation will inhibit heat transfer. :)
