I'm not sure what I did wrong but I woke up to all my coal had been turned to ash and just a tiny bit of red left in the stove . I didn't try to save it . I dumped it and decided to try out the rings I got in.
You can see the gap in the front . This is the amount I need to take off of the refractory in place. To all GB6 and GB8 owners that don't have the rings and only the front piece make sure you take off from time to time and clean out under it. With the gas rings in and cemented ash and coal shouldn't get behind it but without the rings this piece just collects ash and coal bits behind/under it .
These rings fit perfectly against the barrel and are very good quality .
Thank you Wilson ! I will be speaking with you soon again.
I'm going to go outside now and enjoy the hickory smoke . It is one thing I have missed about wood burning . That smell is magical ! But as soon as this hickory makes coals this morning it's back to coal.

I actually might continue to burn oak and hickory for the next two days . Tomorrow is going to be 64 and Monday 66 . I can't justify burning coal those two days . So maybe this all worked out well . Unfortunately I must split some wood today... Blah .

You folks are having a heat wave down there. All of next week is suppose to be cold here...3 days of below zero. Splitting wood...well, I guess you will be warmed twice today.Smokeyja wrote:Thanks Randy!Photog200 wrote:Looks awesome Josh!

Virginia is a weird place... Just yesterday it was 10° in the morning and well you can see for yourself below ...
Surprisingly my Volvo 240 wagon must have had water in the fuel filter or water somewhere and it froze in the fuel lines and the engine cut off while trying to go to work. The diesel Volvo 240 on the other hand doesn't have a block heater but I still managed to get it to start to go to work. If you don't like the weather in virginia on any given day just wait 5 minutes and you'll see .

that front piece lots of time does not fit good , gaps. I think its so many years of heat they tend to bend in. Today I heated and bent one back a little Im going to add a little on each side and have a bunch recast. Im making another to fit the wings best. they need to be sealed in there with furnace cement like you said.

Yes I've noticed it looks like it could use a little tweaking . We will see how well this one is when I go to put the rings in permanent .wilsons woodstoves wrote:that front piece lots of time does not fit good , gaps. Hey All,
I put my new gas ring in as well. Thanks Wilson! I chipped away the refractory cement around the fire pot rim and below the door to get a good fit. Then I cleaned up the rings, the curved plate and the barrel with steel wool, dampened slightly and cemented them in. I back-buttered the rings for a good seal against the stove body. Took some work to get an acceptable fit with the curved plate. The right hand side is not as good as the left, but it will do. Much better than before adding the ring, when the curved plate was sitting up quite a bit and was little more than an air deflector. The curved plate fit better against the stove and the ring ends when I raised it up slightly and brought it a bit closer to the stove body. You can see in the pics it's not sitting in the recessed lip like it's supposed to. It did not fit well at all in the original mounting position - too curved, and the RH stove bolt was too short. Here are some pics of the various stages, for your viewing pleasure!

brunom....that front piece looks like a pretty good fit to me. You can put a small fillet of stove cement in there and it'l be fine. You do want that sealed as possible.

Bruno, my front piece fits about the same . As Wilson said they all seem to need a bit of tweaking but I'm going to do the stove cement trick. You can put stove polish on the cement to dye it black as well.
Thanks for the photos ! Looks great ! I'm waiting until summer to get into cutting mine .
Noticing any burn differences ?

I just used some inexpensive black Rutland cement on mine. It's held up all winter so far and if I didn't tell you I cemented it, you wouldn't notice.Smokeyja wrote:Bruno, my front piece fits about the same .
