That really depends on how strong your chimney draft is. Hitzer recommends running the stove in the .03-.06 draft range so if you have a draft running from 2 to 3 times higher then the .06 upper limit you do need a baro if you don't want your heating $$ going up the chimney.rstrawsburg wrote: I paid about 2600 with delivery and new stove pipes to the thimble including the barometric damper. Which isn't really needed with this stove.

VB, remove bricks, grates, grate frame, door, & anything else that looks removable--take a good 2 wheel dolly, some straps & a big ass friend Stick with that manual damper & see how she works, I'm sure it'll work just fine!

Take the hopper out. One bolt. Slides right out. At least 40lbs of cast iron there.

So The family and I(wife and three kids) wrestled the stove into the basement. Built a skid on some long 4x6 I had laying around and a block and falls hooked to my pickup outside for an anchor. Slid her right in! Actually went quite well. Got it all hooked up, chimneys clean and in like new condition. Put about 5 lbs. charcoal in and touch it off.In just a few minutes had smoke pouring out everywhere! Thinking it was a pressure thing I opened couple doors and windows. It just made it worse! What the hell! So I carted a box fan up to the top of the chimney laid it on top sucking the smoke up and out the flue. Plugged her in and presto! In just a few minutes had a blazing coal fire! Nice warm constant heat!

Hehe Keeps the neighbors wondering about me! Worked great though! Once some heat got in there all is good! I am wondering when your stoves are rolling along and everything is good, how far is the little draft door in the back open? Currently mine is closed to about 1/4 " , manual pipe damper nearly horizontal, ash pan door sealed tight. I know it is really a situation dependent type question so just an average would help me out.

Just read this and seen that a stove had been installed...
Do you have a couple working Carbon Monoxide Alarms installed?
Protect that family.

Congrats on the new stove!!VicB wrote:I need to get a temp gauge
I use a threaded barbeque temp probe in the flue pipe and a IR gauge for the sides. The probe gauge is available in a big box for about $10 and the IR makes it easy to get temps on different parts of the stove quickly. A side benefit of the IR is that the laser pointer can be used to drive the outside cats crazy.
Definitely get a couple CO monitors as McG mentioned. Digital display monitor type are very nice because they can show a low level of CO before the alarm would trigger. You can catch any potential issues early that way.
I have had to use a hair dryer set on high inserted in the flue pipe to get the draft headed the correct direction prior to the first firing. I like your box fan idea though, we needed a pic or two of that operation!!
