Amazing when you hear from someone who actually knows what the code says verses people who guess at it isn't it?

I was a NB commissioned boiler inspector in multiple states for 27 years in my previous life. When I taught new inspectors I told them they would live and die by the Code and to be sure they could quote it from their jurisdiction because things can change from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Not a lot but to say something is against code everywhere without quoting your local code is just wrong. Get a copy and read it for yourself. That's just like saying since your coal costs $7.50 a bag for a 40# bag therefore coal everywhere costs the same.

We had a local code officer tell a matriarchal family head that they couldn't have a NG un-vented heater anywhere in her house. She asked me and I told her to go back and get the code officer to provide her with the citation from the code that prohibits it. Code enforcement never replied because there was no code and the code person just didn't like unvented NG wall mounted heaters. She went to the library and looked up the code herself and ensured that she had the required CO detectors and enough fresh air exchange to be safe.

This is what drives the experts crazy. You have a multitude of codes and versions for each situation. What it depends on is what particular code has your jurisdiction adopted or opted out of. We live in a township that adopted the International Building Code and NFPA codes but do you think they could have adopted the entire codes and it be the most current?

Nope

They adopted a mishmash of IBC chapters and versions (years put out) and did the same with the NFPA. In the township I lived in before this one the three Supervisors opted out of ALL codes and decided to go instead with local ordinances. They didn't want to have to pay a code enforcement or inspection officer that way or so they thought. What it did was make the Fire Chief the defacto code officer for interpretation and the single police officer the code inspector for enforcement. Neither one knew what they were doing when it came to code so they didn't do anything. It was like the wild west. No regulation, no guidelines.

If you want to know if something is or is not against the code, my advise is to always research it yourself. Trust me there is a code for everything and every situation. The question is did your jursidiction adopt it or not?
