I've been eyeballing this stove now for 2 winters on nh Craig's list under Glenwood in Farmington, I'm really tempted to go look at it, what you guys thoughts on the description? What kind of grates do these have and is it a base heater style stove??

The Hickory is an oak, not a base heater. It can burn both coal or wood, but it has the "draw center" type round grate, not the triangular grates of the Oak, Modern Oak, and Base Heaters.

It's info is listed here as the second stove down.

The Hickory did as Paul said had a back pipe Which shared some of the same parts with the modern oak. There were cast iron linings that sat on top of the fire pot to protect the steel( much like the # 6. but without the air holes) Very fancy stove, If those linings are still intact it should be a good one. I watched that stove also .If its the same one its missing a piece of trim.

Once thing more To repeat Paul It does have a draw center grate and is marked hickory and will only fit hickory. make sure that new grate works smooth

In your opinion would it be a better long term heater for wood or coal than the laurel that I have been playing wih

That's a beautiful Oak and looks to be in superb condition. The price is high, especially since it's a draw center grate. I personally have come to prefer the pyramid grates such as what the Glenwood Oaks and the No. 6 BH have.

For $500-600, I would seriously consider it, if I was in the market.

That's my opinion - Chris

decent size stove and as has been noted rare condition.

does it also have an indirect back pipe.

either way, if a direct draft stove this size will carry the load in your application that would be a nice one if you can make the deal you need.

I don't believe it has the back pipe, and plan to go look at it and possibly bring it home tomorrow at 1
Im going to try to get there and back before the snow starts

as far as the skirts all the pics I have been able to find online none have any skirting that this one don't have on it but he never did say what still needs to be done, he is installing the mica tonight in the door said "he puts it in when they sell that way it don't get poked or ruined before use"

anyone know how the draw grate works such as it appears it pulls from the side rather then the front so dose this mean there is a big gash in the side of the base so you cab shake it down?

It has a back up plate which slides with the grate. they are a nice grate they only allow fine ash through

The side lever for the draw grate is very standard.

You will need a shaker tool. It's a handle that slots into the lever end of the grate.

They can be hard to find. I have a few I've collected.

Hope you get it - Chris
