Labman, it's good to hear from somebody familiar with the area. We were hit by that ice storm last year and actually lost power do to ice tearing the weatherhead from the house. We had a small fire that took a while to get things back to normal. We have a backup generator for power outages currently, but I plan on adding a small wood stove on the 1st floor as a backup and just because I like wood heat in the living room once in a while.
-40 is definitely possible here. We've seen -30 and colder quite a few times already this winter. As windyhill pointed out, the reason we use so little oil is partially because of my OCD about energy efficiency upgrades, but mostly because I keep the house so cool

Windy, I understand that. If you had read my post you would know I am oh too familiar with the weather in this area having spent time there both summer and winter. What they are doing is common practice there. They turn up the heat when "company" comes so you will be warm. Then turn it back down when you leave.windyhill4.2 wrote:labman, the reason that tuttlere uses so little oil is because he doesn't heat his house ! he only keeps it from freezing.

Only hope to be of help! I try to get up there every chance I have to see my granddaughter. I have seen some drastic temp extremes. Almost 90 one day and a day later a low of 37. Morning lows of -25 to -30 and highs of -10. Love the area, but I really don't like temps that cold any more. Getting old, I guess?tuttlere wrote:Labman, it's good to hear from somebody familiar with the area. You may want to consider a hand fed coal stove for the first floor backup? No creosote to deal with, so no chimney fires. And longer burn times too.
