PostBy: lsayre On: Thu. Feb. 12, 2015 6:49 pm

Get ready for a few cold days my fellow Ohioans! -2 degrees tonight, -7 degrees Saturday night, and -10 degrees Sunday night (with the Sunday high at only +2 degrees). Sunday in particular should prove to be be a good test for your coal heating set-up.

Indeed. -10 with 15 mph wind at my place. I think that is -32 on the windchill charts. Looks like a frozen tundra outside. On a day like this I could use more radiation in the house.

Ahh, the sun (I think that's what it's called) is shining & It's clear up to -3 so things are looking up for a minute or two any how. I now only have to clear off two steps to the snow level that's packed down probably till June so life is easier. Stay safe & warm!

Only hit 0* here, with no wind.

Been watching 5 deer bedded down in back yard.
Smart creatures, all 5 bedded on a row of thick fluffy bare (no snow) leaves and at same time waiting for the sun rising to take them from the shadows into the warmth of the full sun.
Interesting to see them conserving their body heat with taking turns watching out and tucking their noses under a curled thigh. 8-)

I just loaded up my coal consumption vs. HDD's spreadsheet with the most updated upcoming local temperatures, and from the 13th (yesterday) through the 22nd I'm going to burn through 850 lbs. of coal. That's 85 lbs. per day on average for 10 days. The highest single day among them should use 106 lbs. That will be tomorrow, when the high is to be +2 degrees and the low is to be -12 degrees.

My currently projected hopper loading schedule is as follows:
Today: Add 162 lbs. (covering the 13th and 14th)
Tomorrow: Add 106 lbs.
Next Tuesday: Add 156 lbs.
Next Thursday: Add 188 lbs.
Next Saturday: Add 158 lbs.
Next Sunday: Add 80 lbs.

Ash tub emptying is projected to be on the 16th, the 19th, and the 22nd (plus I just did this yesterday). I'll be pushing the upper limits of ash tub capacity to make it to these dates though. Should be about 3/4 full on the 16th and 19th, and 2/3 full on the 22nd.

But if my recently discovered efficiency gain of 5.5% hold true, then each of these scheduled fillings will be reduced by that amount.

I will also be verifying if my circulator on low speed can keep the home warm at minus 12 degrees, or if I will need to bump it back up to medium speed.

Although my hopper nominally holds 250 lbs. of coal, I find that it "rat holes" the feed down the center line and that up to about 50 lbs. generally get hung up on the hoppers sidewalls, and will never make it to the fire pot by gravity alone. That is why my individual hopper loadings are always scheduled with a 200 lb. maximum limit in mind. Next Thursday will be the closest I will come to testing the 200 lb. limit.

Larry, If it is a desire, a BBQ rotisserie w/ thin fingers could be mounted through the hopper and could solve the "rat holeing". One can find them at big box or online.

The very latest forecast from Weather Underground is for temperatures to be noticeably lower than the forecasts from earlier today which led me to believe that I will be burning about 850 lbs. over a 10 day span. I wonder how this will all play out. 900 lbs.???? More than 900 ???

I'm sure If the temps stay cold the rest of this month I will use close too a ton, the Hitzer is eating around 80#/day running 600 to 650* and keeping the house 75*.I'm at -4 right now but I think it may be colder then that due to the fact of where the pick up is, It's within 2' of the house so I'm sure I'm getting some heat bleed. We are at -5 degrees here, vs. forecasts for -12 to -14.

7:00 AM is generally about the coldest time of the day for this region, so I think the weather prognosticators went overboard once again.

We did well @ -8*......Well above what it could've been. The wind on top of that is the second half of the Threat. Folks outside doing dumb things in this weather becomes a story unto itself.....Don't become a Casualty.
