Get another stove, heat your basement with a stove, any stove and here area few reasons why. I have 3 stoves, don't ask why not enough time 2 of my stoves are hooked up. I have been running my back up, extreme cold stove in the basement for about a month now and I am glad. That stove warms my floors, keeps my unfinished basement @ approx 60*, keeps my hot water heater and water pipes nice and warm, it pushes hot air through my furnaces air vents, and allows me to keep the living room Vigilant a cool 350* - 400* . With this arrangement I am burning about half the oil for hot water and no fans upstairs to move air around and burning half the coal upstairs. So now I am heating approx. 2000 sq. ft. of an un-insulated home, (insulated ceiling) in central Maine and wearing "T" shirts and shorts. the extra time and coal is minimal. If this thread merely convinces you to buy another stove my work is done.

That alone should be enough of a reason for most people!!! Not to mention the $$$$$$$$ saved. Even if one is burning 3 stoves! WOO HOO!!! Gotta love coal!michaelanthony wrote: So now I am heating approx. 2000 sq. ft. of an un-insulated home, (insulated ceiling) in central Maine and wearing "T" shirts and shorts.

I agree completely. When its cold like now I run both mine. Neither has to work as hard and the house feels warmer. I doubt it takes much more fuel than running one stove.

As shameful as this is to admit...being a bricklayer by trade...I've more stoves than chimneys to put them in. Glad I got that off my chest. I feel liberated.

I have 4 stoves and only one hooked up! I think I'm gonna take the plunge and hook one of my WMs in the kitchen this week. I wish stove pipe didn't cost so much.
And I wish I had a basement . I have a crawl space of less than 12" . My floors are cold .
Glad you are sorted out though .

I'm Curious,
Just how many stoves can be hooked to a ... lets say 28ft tile lined ( center of house) block chimney? It passes through four (4) rooms and a basement.
I've burned two stoves at a time with no problem - are three stoves doable?
Dare we think five stoves ?

One house, one stove. My floors are fine. My basement is at 45F. I'm happy with that.
To each their own.
I would think that w/2 stoves, you may burn the same qty of coal .. unless you want your house at 90F

By code it's 1 stove per flue...Buck47 wrote:I'm Curious,

you can have more than one stove on a chimney if its the same fuel type, not that being code matters anyway.
5 stoves sounds excessive but if you have the draft, why not?

Me, too. The difference in how warm the house is remarkable. Do it, sooner rather then latter. Lisawarminmn wrote:I agree completely. When its cold like now I run both mine. Neither has to work as hard and the house feels warmer. I doubt it takes much more fuel than running one stove.

We don't concern ourselves with code here.warminmn wrote:you can have more than one stove on a chimney if its the same fuel type, not that being code matters anyway.

Yes all would be coal fired, Not all would be fired at the same time, It's more an issue of having 3 to 5 stoves connected to one chimney, with two fired at the same time.
I was being flippant should have been more clear in my meaning.
Inside tile flue dimension is 6 1/2 X 11
