Ok this is a very simple drawing, I'm thinking about putting this on top of my hotblast furnace under the tin work, so that it rest right on top of the stove steel, maybe have to build a steel cover for it so the plenum fan doesn't effect it, I don't want to spend the big money on the SS coil kit and I don't want to drill holes in my furnace just yet, what do you guys think? It should heat the water? There is only two of us here, one shower in the morning an one at night, I have a electric 40 gallon hot water tank.

It will preheat the incoming water a bit. It will not be that effective. I believe the most you could expect is slightly warm.

Yes, I guess my main concern is will black iron pipe be ok for DHW? It's not inside the stove so don't have to worry about fly ash or anything. The pipes in the ground coming to your house are cast iron and steel so what would be the difference

You will initially get some rusty looking water until the pipe gets a "skin coating" of corrosion inside the pipe. After that it should be fine. A yarn type cartridge water filter would take care of that.

You could just hang an old electric HWH above the furnace (horizontal if need be) as a temper tank. Re-plumb as required and make it thermosphion to the temper tank and then on demand fill the normal tank.

Need to have bypass valves for normal summer time operation w/o sweating condensation.

Hi HB, have you given any thought of a thermosyphon tank before your electric HW tank and let it circulate with out the need of a pump? You can ask a plumber friend for an old tank that doesn't leak. My thought is pumping water may not be in the loop long enough to get the results you are hoping for. just my 2 cents

Are you going to set up a temper tank? Or cut the power to the tank in use right now?

Well I don't know, I have a old oil fired tank sitting around. My electric tank is only 12-15 feet away, but doesn't the return have to be level? I would have to hang it in the air.. I think I would just hook it too my 40 gallon electric tank, and probably just shut off.

To thermosyphen the tank has to be higher than the coil.

Ya so thermosyphon would not work.

Remove the insulation from the old tank and raise it as high as you can, fill it with town water first you will have "X" number gallons of water warmer going to your electric HW tank. With only 2 adults you should see immediate electricity savings.

edit... a tempering tank will help some.

How about instead of making a coil out of black iron pipe I make like a little tank to mount on top? That would give me more water capacity to heat.

Won't my electric tank still run all the time keeping it up to temp?

Your HWH will run less.
If you are trying to make a boiler out of your furnace how will you heat the house?
