I have been having a slight issue with my 105, of course this is the coldest weather we have had I. A while. This is also my first year burning coal. Everything has been great so far I burned about 2.5-3 ton so far and my house has been 74-77 degrees. When the weather drops and I turn up the stove near full fire I found the ash cakes up and doesn't always fall into the ash pan. I have had it twice hit the front of the stove and jam up all it would take is a little tap and it falls. It only does it when the weather drops and I am running it within 1-2 turns out. The fire is within a inch of the end. Thanks

- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
- Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
This can be caused by a little to much combustion air. I think what happens is that the coal at the bottom of the coal bed (right on top of the grate) gets burned at a high enough temp to fuse the the coal. creating a Clinker. If you look at your ash and see flat pieces in there the shape of your grate, that's what's happening.
In the milder weather, thoe stoker doesn't run for long enough periods of time for this to be noticable. If you reduce the combution air a bit, this should stop happening.

Thank you. That is exactly what it looks like. Is there any true way of setting the air or is it mainly just kinda like guessing till it is right

THat happens sometimes when it's really cold and you push the stoves hotter to keep up. What he said about the combustion air, if you can reduce it a little does help some, also I've run little mix of buckwheat size with my rice with my Keystoker 90K, and it still clickers up a little, but it breaks off and falls into ash pan.
If you have the cover on the combustion air, just close it a little at a time, it should be about 1/2 open or so to start, just tweak it a little and see what happens.
Are you running a natural draft chimney or directvent? checked your draft ?
