The Weso burned all night!! Thanks for all your suggestions. I gave it a vigorous shaking and cleaning, loaded it to the hilt, opened the primary to 3 of 5 and secondary to 2 of 3 and was greeted this morning to a glow which caught rapidly with the addition of more coal. I'm happy and warm.

Awesome sav I'm glad it went well. I was thinking those nice bricks you made caused a problem because they are not cast iron and changed the characteristics of the stove but you've proven me wrong.

Good news. Now you have to make it easy to clear the ash and perhaps a higher banking plate for the front.

Forgot to mention this- Not being familiar with Weso's, I assumed the shaker system was functioning properly when I bought it. It seemed to move the ash grate only about 1/4" from side to side in a twisting motion. Not much in my opinion. Thinking that it should move more than that and possibly coal debris was hampering the movement, I checked its operation carefully and lo and behold, there was , indeed, a hunk o' coal jammed in the mechanism. Once removed the grate now moves freely from side to side at least an inch in either direction!! That will help immensely with initial ash removal. This ,I'm sure, was part of my problem of clogged grates not allowing more primary air for more complete combustion hence a better chance of longer burns.

Great! Next try for 12 hour burn times..
But not at the expense of loosing the fire.
As you learn the burn, you will discover what it takes to get what ya want.
