I searched both IP's they went to two locations in North Carolina, one was a very rural area.

I know a few people that this has happened to this year. They all and the same health insurance company which had their database hacked. The insurance company is helping them out with the problem. Maybe something similar happened to you?

This will tell you who the ISP is and the general area. http://www.ip-tracker.org/ The ISP would have the actual address. The thief could be using a proxy or VPN which would mask their real IP.The thief also could have got on an unsecured wifi router somewhere.

Yeah, they won't find this guy. Unless they can track the I tunes cards to another IP but that would be a lot of work... Unless it was the same IP , there is a connection somewhere. The I tunes cards can be tracked to the tax return and then to who ever is using them, but this person may be selling them to others.

I'm not hurt by this yet but my info is still out there. I still have to call the SSA , you would think I would get a new SS number, but that would open a new can of worms. I do know I will get a PIN number from the IRS each year which I will need to file my taxes so this should not happen again, I hope..

Again G, direct deposit to your bank from IRS has worked safely for years.

Not an issue Fred, I think, I have not done my taxes yet.. And when you give more info out there is more risk, dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

The only one I know of that was able to get a new SS number is Obama. And that number wasn't a new one, it was the number of a deceased person that was born 4,000 miles from where Obama was supposedly born.

Wow... This seems to be the a growing crime... Our leo community needs to be trained up on fighting this and of course our house of representing needs to get up to speed on this giving them the support needed.

The company that handle our health care benefits was hacked and my entire family's I.D. info is out there... I own a policy with Zander Ins. Co. (Not an insurance product ,but a administrative services contract) They cover the cost of the restoration of the theft...Figured it better than nothing...This is off there web site:

UNLIMITED RECOVERY SERVICES: WE HANDLE ALL THE WORK TO RESTORE YOUR IDENTITY
REIMBURSEMENT: UP TO $1 MILLION IN EXPENSE PROTECTION
PREVENTION: WE HELP YOU MINIMIZE YOUR RISK OF IDENTITY THEFT

One way or another, the cost will eventually be passed on to all the customers and/or tax payers.

I had an interesting talk with a VISA security person when my then-wife (now ex-wife's) credit cards were stolen. He said the entire cost of the illegal charges made on stolen cards gets passed on to those high interest rates charged to credit card customers.

I think one of the best things you can do is freeze your credit reports. Unfreeze for a short time if you need them.. I think that may take you off the preapproved credit card offers as well, not sure but I know a credit alert will and you can get that up to seven years..
