Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Looking to buy one

Post by 2004blackwrx » Fri. Mar. 06, 2015 11:56 pm

This is my first winter of owning a koker. Its been great. Today I hit my first issue. A little back round to in case it matters. This week I almost ran out of coal. We had a warm day and the bottom inch of my bin defrost and I got 4 more 5 gallon buckets of very wet coal. I added it to the furnace and there was probably water with it that caused steam and caused furnace to shut down. I reset it and also found a gallon of water on floor from what was in bucket. Stove ran fine for 3 more days. This morning woke up to a cold house due to almost running out of coal and the furnace just simmering. Got my coal delivery just in time and refilled hopper. Unfortunately house never heated back up. Furnace is feeding but the bed isn't all flame. I adjusted feed rate to max but still not enough to fill bed. What am I missing. Also noticed grease on the white wheel that spins while feeding. Lastly the mechanism that moves in and out while feeding has some coal in it on the top between what moves and what hold it in place. Thanks for the help.

Running hopper low can melt nylon bolts in feeder.
Gallon of water can make coal fines/ dust into a cement.
You have a shut down and some work to do!

Sounds like a good cleaning is needed, due to the water and mixing with the ash, etc.... it may have gummed some stuff up.

The nylon parts of the feeder are there to reduce or stop the feed if the fire burns back toward the hopper. Running very low in the hopper can make this start to happen. You should always keep a spare set of nylon parts (cam, bolts) in case this happens.

You should never put wet coal in the hopper, it will cause all kinds of problems. If the only coal you have is wet, take a few bucket fulls and spread them out on the floor in a warm dry place for at least a hour. This will get the bulk of the moisture out and cause less of a problem.
