Glad You Stopped In And Stayed ! We'll be looking forward to helping You out ! Please Always Remember !: The only Dumb Question is the one not asked ! Now is the time to get all Your Ducks in a row,and avoid headaches or the waste of Your Valuable Cash due to Tearing Out and Reworking Your Install......Can You tell us about Your Chimney/Flu,Your present Heating System(Forced Air,Hot Water(Hydronic)(Yes,Folks have changed over, that's why I'm asking!) and Your Home Type of Construction along with square footage. It wouldn't hurt to include the present insulation factor, and the condition of Your Doors and Windows for a Heat Loss Picture......It could help, and Hopefully You've already considered all of that since You've gone after Your New Heating Animal !

Hi everyone back again , house has oil forced air heat , 1500 sf. ranch stlye house all out side wall are insulated the floor are not insulated ,the Chimney/Flu is a terra cotta liner but is not in go shape that's will be installing ss flu & cap. Good windows & doors the oil .furnace was installed in 1997 . I am going to use the new coal stoker as main heat source next year and the oil furnace as backup.

Welcome to the dark side!!!

A couple CO monitors for safety and a manometer along with a flue temp gauge and thermometer for the stove body are some things to invest in. A lot of questions you ask will be answered with a question or two about the data those things can provide. It can be hard sometimesto diagnose over the interweb and all the extra info we can get helps a lot.

Are you sure about this? The reason I ask is because some will always want to sell you a liner, how old is the house and chimney?

Plus if this chimney lined with tile was only used for a oil burner it may not be bad, I would be checking it out for my self if you relied on the advice of a so called pro

Doby is right.. you might not need the stainless Steel liner. Fly ash is not friendly to metal chimneys. Some have SS liners last many years, some only a few years.

The house and chimney was built in the mid 50's , I know cost of ss flu liner but I think it would be a good reassurance , I for got to tell everyone that chimney has 2 flu's the oil furnace use's a 8x8 terra cotta flu liner and the other one is 8x13 terra cotta flu liner the original home owners had a wood burner furnace .

The fact that the chimney was built in the 50's is testament of the durability of the terra-cotta ,it will likely be good for another 50 yrs.NO ss chimney will last nearly that long.
