I have been playing ( with days above freezing) on coal use reduction. I have raan a 290 stove temp and small fire in the middle for about 12 hours each day. Coal usage is down to 20lbs, vs 30 at its peek, and avg of 26 .

My stove top is measuring 140F now...coldest temp in house @ 69F.
When burning in the dead of winter the stove top runs 350-450F.
I can place my hand on the stove (not inside it) w/o concern.
Burning about 20 lbs/day.
Stove running for a little heat and to dry out the house (w/o it I'm sure the house would be damp).

I've had my stove down to 265 degrees, afraid to push it any lower and risk losing the fire. I could barely feel the heat off of it at that point. I stick to a strict 12 hour tending schedule so I'm not sure how long it would go at that rate, although I've gone about 36 hours before with some sign of life left!

At low burn rates, I pay attention to the stack temperature rather than the stove temperature. As long as the stovepipe (above the baro) shows 85-90 degrees, I have never lost the fire.tcalo wrote:I've had my stove down to 265 degrees, afraid to push it any lower and risk losing the fire.

This Chubby is amazing , I loaded last nite at 8 pm stove temp 260 , just finished shake and fill 2:45 pm . 181/2 hours and pot was still three quarters full. OAT is 65 , low tonight is only going down to 60 . Air intake is just a sliver , I'm going to make a little less and see how it goes. I've been putting top shovel at about half fines half nut and has really slowed down the burn.
