Metal is best. Plastic has a drag to it and would require a steeper angle.

I'm not sure to scrap this idea based on feedback about being able to turn the auger under the load of coal. :(

It has been done before, you need a way to open more or to close more to find the "sweet" spot that is right.

Ah. Gives me an idea.
If I angle the pipe down, away from the discharge side, cut holes or even a slot on the top, the cover the length of the pipe with a metal cap that extends into my garage......

..... I could attempt to pull the metal cap, exposing the exact right amount of opening, regulating the amount of coal that's in the pipe. As the desirable opening will be at the bottom of the angled pipe, material would always move towards that opening ( or be pushed ).

The only question there is will I be able to pull that metal sleeve with 3tons of rice on it! I could pick up a few bags of rice to simulate this over the summer...hmmm

Thanks for the tip!!

Have you seen this thread...he has control over how many openings let coal in to his auger similar to what you are looking for.

HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS PLACE :). I did read that a long time ago but forgot. Thanks for bringing it up.

I was going to go with the angled pipe, one hole at the bottom that I could cover if nessasary to pull the auger out for un jamming, cleaning whatever. The one hole would feed the bottom of the pipe with minimal pressure on the rest of the auger.

But... This idea has me thinking again about the flat floor approach. Thanks!

I wonder is using roof flashing and over lapping it, up the sides would work? It's metal and is cheap enough

You need at least a 50 degree angle on the floor to keep it flowing. that makes a lot of wasted space in the bin.

Then again, by next year you might come up with a better idea?

I've been kicking around an idea for a coal conveyor also. My thoughts have actually been about the possibility of using treadmills? Maybe pick up a couple at a flea market or yard sale? Thoughts?
