Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Well McLain
Coal Size/Type: Anthracite

Hi all... I am new to the forum, so if I do this incorrectly or posted this in the wrong location... I will take gentle criticism and correct faulty actions.

I have what was originally a Hand Fired Coal to Steam unit in a 6,000+ sq/ft 200 year old hotel.

Some time in the 50s-60s they turned it into an Oil Fired unit by changing a few options.

I want to get it back to Coal... but am lacking in understanding what is missing from this box.

The brand name on the front door cast iron and on the service plaque added when it was converted to oil states, "Michigan City Weil-McLain Co.Inc."

Other information on this red plaque states:

Sq. Ft. Steam 1570 (Auto.Fired)
MBH Water 436.5
ASME MAX WP WATER 30 PSI; STEAM 15 PSI
Boiler Size B-773W
Series 1
Oil 4.60 GPH
Baffles NO

On another plate it states:

PENNSYLVANIA STANDARD NUMBER 3425

And a final plate just states:

B88266 (PA Keystone Symbol) 72

Here is a picture of the plates (this is the only viable information on this box... the rest is cleaning instructions and warnings)

Here are the plates on the side of the box

Contact the manufacturer. They are still in business.

Install a stoker and keep the existing unit for 100% backup.

Might want to try posting this question in the boilers, stokers and furnaces section of this site. Maybe some-one reading and proficient at this topic would be more familiar. Good luck on your quest to convert back, and another...WELCOME!
