It is very good that you are asking about this instead of ignoring it! You are describing conditions of carbon monoxide in your home. You should shut the unit down until it is figured out. Do you have CO monitors in the house?

Has the power vent been cleaned and has the flue pipe to the power vent been cleaned? Fly ash will build up in there and limit the draft causing it to back up other places, like your hopper.

Welcome to the forum Pastylin.

I assume that when you open up the hopper you smell sulfur at times...not that you routinely have this sensation.

Does this occur only when your stove is at idle? I have had similar to this (smelling coal when I access my hopper but only at the lowest idle there is -- no CO in house per CO detector).

I generally open the stove up a little more.,..this solves the "issue". A draft issue most likely.

Is the fire burning to far up the grate???????? Or more than it normally would?
I assume with this weather your burning it very low with these stoves its critical that the grate gaskets especially the strong back is in good shape and when bad with the stove at idle the fire creeps back up the grate and can cause a hopper fire, smell, condensation.

How old are the grate gaskets? Alaska recommends replacement every 3 years but I have seen them go much longer. Another thing that can cause this is fines under the grate, this blocks the air holes in the grate and forces the combustion air out around the grate and back toward the hopper.

As others have said, shut it down clean the vent system, check gaskets, clean under the grate.

What model alaska is it?
