That lives in a 600 sq ft one story house on the shore of lake Ontario. He currently heats the thing with a small wood stove, or I should say overheats ,then underheats, then overheats some more and , well you know the drill. I recently went to stay for a few days and gadzooks ......... So , I told him he needed to get a small coal stove ( read cheap!!!) as he is tighter than a knats a$$ . Well I have no experiance with hand fired stoves but it seems to me that a small stove, maybe a chubby or crane 44 or??? would be the thing for him, both to moderate temp swings and holding a fire for twelve hrs or so. Could you guys weigh in on some ideas and baseburners are out as he wont spend the money or time to rehab an old stove. Im thinking <$500 is about it. What say you?
and thanx in advance,

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
Here's a couple coal stoves in the area:
A Harman. It doesn't say what model, a MK1 would work well in that house, an MK2 or three would be to big. For $400 it's worth a shot.
**Broken Link(S) Removed**
Fancy looking Summit Foundery stove for $350.

There was a few interesting cook stoves. If I lived up there I would cook with coal most of the year!

A small to medium coal range would easily heat that size space with about 30-35 pounds of coal in 24 hours. It will give 11- 12 hour burn times. Plus, it would work during power outages and save additional cost of whatever he's spending to do his cooking with.
But, finding a decent coal range for cheap is not going to be as easy as finding a small coal heat stove.

Waldo,
You can lead them to the Breaker, but you can't make'um burn the coal.

Can you steer him toward reading some of the threads about various types of stoves on here ? Maybe links to specific threads ? ........... other than this one.waldo lemieux wrote:Thanks for the help fellas. From what little I know I think it would be a great choice. My problem is that Im gonna have to buy it and then let him use it in order to get him to try it. Im just not able to spend over 300 , though Im sure once he finds out just how evil wood is Ill probably turn a profitONEDOLLAR wrote:I am pretty sure Larry has a refurbed JR in stock right now.

One huge "tool" is the NO Chimney fires, Creosote from Wood Burning is gone!
MY Chubby, ( reman last year) ,avg'ed about 27 lbs a day, and its not a JR. I Imagine that would be super efficient.
I am buying a new top vent Chubby so mine is for sale , but I am 7 hours from Utica area.

In all fairness to the buddy, about all you may be able to do [since you mentioned he is tight as a gnat a$$ with the money], is to lay out the facts, add in the part about needing a C.O, detector and step back while his mental machinery goes into decision mode. I always say you can lead a gnat to the coal pile but you cannot make him shovel. Good Luck. Mike

Mike,
Being a wood burner , especially under 50, its hard to get a grasp on how much work, burning wood is.
especially till ya find out how much work burning coal...... isn't! Eventually I get him over to the dark side

First one is a larger top loaded hopper fed and looks in descent shape, the other is a smaller front loaded without a hopper and the ad shows no picture indicating it's condition.waldo lemieux wrote:http://rochester.craigslist.org/mat/5097315509.html
