Anyone know if it is possible to do a 'side-vent' with a hand fired stove? My Dad is thinking of getting a coal stove but does not want to run a chimney and does not want to go stoker.

Yes it is possible. They sell what is called a power vent, but you need power to run it. This can be a problem if you loose power, unless you have a battery backup system to automatically kick in if power goes out. Check Harman, they sell them I believe.

I was under the impresion that power vents were used for stokers only?

They may be, I've never used one, just seen them advertised. For myself, I'm a little leary of anything that requires power to get the carbon monoxide out of my house. I will rely on a chimney. I know there are a lot of strings on power vents here, hopefully someone that owns one can help out with info.

I believe, Harman has one, which is auto feed, direct vent. Meaning, it doesn't need power or chimney. This may be the one or they may have more than one.

They have power vents for everything now a days, pellet, wood, coal stoves and oil, gas boilers, water heaters. We have one on our oil water heater.
