Kimmels at Tractor Supply

They are new to the coal game. In my area 1st they stocked it everywhere in the country. This year it is only going to stores that it sold well in and the others cant even order it which seems silly. So the closest one for me is 70 miles now. They sold 7 ton to one man last year when they stocked kimmels. This year i think Im the only one who has bought any there probably because of the brand so they will likely stop selling it to.

Amish are always good to buy from but I was short of cash in the spring when they order mine so like you I relied on TSC.

TSC is like most big box stores, they order and sell a lot of stuff as 'seasonal'. I went in for firebrick one year and pipe another year and they were out. I was told both times that those are seasonal items, whatever they had, they had..........try another store.

We ordered in the summer..they send out flyers.. with a pre season order discount.. this is the way to do it... I have done this for 2 seasons..(since they started carrying)...
On a side note...this new coal in quality plastic bags is awesome..don't know who sold it to TSC but man ...it's so much better then any other brands I've used ..including Blaschak.. damp but not wet.. no clunks or sticks.. very consistent.

Just got back from TSC in Stony Point NY. Earlier this year i purchased the no name nut coal in the plastic bags. I'm a rookie with coal but I can say there was definitely some sticks and other debris found in most of the bags. They sold out of the plastic bags and I picked up 20 bags of Kimmels and I ordered 1 ton. I'll let you know what brand comes when I pick it up. Maybe the Kimmels was left over from last year.

It is somewhat normal to have sticks and other small debri in bags of coal. It is tree roots, old lumber, etc. Nothing to worry about there.

Knowing I would need a steady source of supply, I spoke with two different people at the store and was told without reservation they would have coal. Just needed a two week notice to get it ordered etc. No problem.
Based on that info, I bought the stove and spent an additional $1200 at their store to purchase the chimney kit and accessories. Imagine how happy I was when I was told they did not have any coal and was not to get anymore this year !!
The local manager is, to his credit, trying to locate coal for me from other stores but, this still puts me in a bind until he gets it in. Why would TSC put their managers in such a spot? They do have all the rice coal in the world and I have even seen that marked down but, nut coal is getting real short in supply here.
I hope to find a more reliable source of supply next year. Someone who is good to their word. Another thing that appears to be in short supply.....

We have plenty, TSC shouldn't be running short, they are doing it by choice !

Most of the retailers don't like ordering stuff like coal unless the trailer is full. Makes it more cost effective for them.

Maybe i am misunderstanding what you are trying to say.
Individual TSC stores do not order trailer loads of anything from any business. All orders are sent to the Corporate headquarters, orders to venders are sent from headquarters .

TSC operates on the same common theme as most box stores.

Get your bikini in Feb. & your coal in August.
Don't expect to find the current season's needs in stock.

Last year, both of the two TSC near me were out of nut coal by January. One was willing to place an order for ten bags of Kimmel's nut for me. The other TSC said they weren't ordering anymore for the season.

When the clerk finished filling out the order and gave me my copy I asked when it would be there. He said a pallet would be on the next weekly truck from their warehouse.

When I went to pick it up the next week, there was only one full pallet and it was right near their back rollup door. I just backed in and the stock guy cut the pallet wrapping and helped me load the ten bags.

And, they never asked me to buy the full pallet. They were happy to sell me just ten bags.

I guess if they can get it from their warehouse they might do it.. If the local warehouse doesn't have any more then no dice... this is what I'm thinking..

The one TSC store just didn't want to place an order for a pallet when I was only wanting to buy ten bags in the middle of the season.

I called TSC HQ and they said the warehouse had pallets. So that's when I went to the other TSC store and placed the order for ten bags. That TSC store had no problem with doing that.

I had plenty of bulk nut in my coal bin. I just wanted ten bags of the Kimmels on hand because it was quick lighting and very good at recovering a near dead fire if I was late in tending it. Still have 7 bags of that Kimmel's left over, so I haven't tried any of the coal TSC is selling this year.
