Boy you have got that right, my carb weakness is pasta even more than bread. I still eat it but in moderation as carbs are an important part of a diet. They are a good energy source, but where I get into trouble is when I eat more than I can burn off during exercise. Thats when they turn to insulin and tell the body to store the excess as fat. I think Franco was correct in part of what he said that exercise is more important than diet when trying to loose weight. Having said that, I believe it takes a combination of both to actually loose weight, you have to burn more calories than you take in for your body to start burning the fat as an energy source. When I was much younger, I was into amateur body building and had great will power. I would measure all of my food for caloric intake...especially for carbs, but also for fat content. I wanted to be sure I had enough energy source for my workouts but not too much where it would turn to insulin. I am trying to incorporate more of that dedication in my diet again today...my how far I have slipped. Franco gave us some excellent information pertaining to genetics and he is correct also in saying what works for someone else may not work for everybody. Thank you for all of that info Franco! You are doing great, but remember the goal is a diet you can live with and not gain weight. You do have some room to add a little something as long as a little does not increase the need for more.

I'm sure you've heard the old saying, "Slow and steady wins the race." That applies to diets too. It's much easier to maintain a weight loss, long-term, if it's a slow and steady weight loss.

I had to make Ravioli and meat sauce in work today ...didn't have any, instead I made a small spinach and mozzarella pie. It made me forget about the Ravioli until they were gone.
For breakfast I have been eating a large bowl of plain oatmeal with a tbsp of honey...damn good!

Stress is the great killer and studying discrete populations such as the Bedouins should give a clue. They iive 30 years longer than us on average (and that is huge, epidemiologically speaking). Weight loss is always good and I wish I weighed less but I am 70 and still look after the horse farm every day. I have not been sick in 20 years at least and no doctor visits. This thread is inspiring me to start weight loss as a small part of the health picture. Food quality is the number 1 problem by far and as it is not even mentioned in any mortality/weight studies I have read they are all useless too. There is a loose correlation such as morbidly obese people die younger. The NYT article is good but this is just the start. Just by dumping ALL processed foods, carbs, anything yeasty, GMOs, food treated with pesticides during the growth cycle etc. etc. Just this list is almost impossible to achieve. I don't believe in, diuretics, anti hypertensives, statins, anti-infectives (except to save a life), pain killers, purple pills or anything that regulates hydrochloric acid from oxyntic cells (antacids) and this list is but a start. Multi vitamins are useless (zero bioavailability). Modern medicine is a complete disaster. Most surgeries are worse than useless (except accidents). I wouldn't even know where to start explaining this. Good luck to all but just ask yourself, do you feel healthy???? Just use common sense as a guide, does it make sense that 74% of the general population are taking some type of pharmaceutical? If the answer is yes then we have nothing more to talk about.
