Hey Tim, hows that new hopper working with the nut coal? Will it pass? Good luck, I hope it works.
P.S. Updated pics would be nice too. :)

Joe,

It worked good last year. Tonight is the 1st night of trying nut this year. I'll post an update in the am. Right now stove is running at about 260° on the heat exchanger with dial at 1 3/4. Draft is a steady -.04

What a nice looking play pen for the little one. She can learn the tending ritual, so you and Hana won't have to. :D

That's right. Time out is spent taking the ashes out in subzero temps. Haha

Good morning all,

Woke up to -7° real feel-16° oats @ 6am. Indoor temps were between 68 and 73 according to the thermometers throughout the house. The pea/nut mix burnt nicely. I love coal heat.

Stay warm today everyone.

it was like that here all day wed. and thurs. today real feel is 2.

it used to be said if you could maintain a 70* differential you were doing well.

looks like both of us are doing better than that, and my stove is opened up about 1/6th of the way.

With today's odd slight warm up I let the Surdiac go out and did a quick clean out. We are back up and running as temps are starting to drop.

Hope everyone's week before Christmas goes well!

Happy new year everyone,

This weekend is calling for some cold weather, lows near 0°. I tried a modification last year but it didn't work as planned as the holes in the metal grate were to big and letting coal fall through. So this past weekend I found some scrap metal at my father in laws shop so I bent it up and made another grate to block coal from hitting the glass. Now I can poke from above and not worry about coal hitting the glass.

Whoa! That's a good lookin coal bed there Tim. That grate seems to really be holding true. Did you say you poke from above? Through the loaded hopper? Or when the coal has burned down, and you're ready to add?
(Tip: These guys taught me, if you take your photo W/O the flash on, you'll see more blues. :) )

Joe,

I poke the coal bed in front and sides of the cast iron coal basket. This allows ash to drop and to break the slight bridge that forms. I've gotten 13-14 hour burns this week and coal bed is very much still alive.

The picture was taken without flash but room light was on.

Good morning,

Winter has set in again. Woke up to 11° real feel 0°. Here is a picture of the coal bed after a 12 hour burns at 7am this morning. If needed I could of let it go another hour easy, but had to head off to work. The hopper was 1/2 full. Next picture is just after reloading process, blues are dancing instantly.

Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Nice Tim. You really put a "super-tune" to that sucker. Great job. When it was mine, the only time it looked like that, was when it was 1st fired, you might get a couple days, then it would gradually ash up. With that opened up hopper, and really piling the thing to it's max, you got a stove to be proud of. :D Good pix too. Thanks for posting.

This "little" Surdiac is a heat monster with the hopper mod Joe. It really surprises me when I come home and it's freezing outside and the Surdiac just shakes it off and it is 78 in stove room. With both the Surdiac and K-lite running now the house is 70 to 78 based on various thermos throughout the house.

Now to crack open a craft beer and relax while the cold snap settles in.
