A firend's vinyl siding is being discolored from the coal exhaust. Wants to know what type of cleaner worked best for anyone out there with similar problems. This is not fly ash his vinyl is stained. Siding color light beige stain is pinkish in tint.

My guess, ... the heat is "bleaching" it.

Try a good household or automotive cleaner/degreaser.

That does happens. I would put a piece of metal or something behind it. I bent my top hat cap on my direct vent so the exhaust went away from the house.

I have used SIMPLE GREEN to clean siding. Works very good on sun beached siding. You might have to do the whole area though so you don't have one shiney spot though.

Do you know what he has tried so far?? TSP? 409? MR Clean? You do have to be careful with stronger solvents, because vinyl siding can be damaged by strong solvents.
Does he have a few pieces of the siding that he can try some stonger solvents on?

The staining may not be a stain, it actually may be the vinyl changing color from the reaction with the coal exhaust. So the color change may not just be on the surface, it may go deeper into the vinyl.

I have the same exact thing happening to my house paint aroung the ss flange that came with the Alaska DV.A little green alot of pink...just plain ugly, but its on the opposite side of the house of the driveway. Out of sight out of mind. I think Gregs right its a reaction of chemicals in the exhaust I think \. Jim

It helped some, you just have to clean it more often.
