Barack Obama repeatedly said, "I wasn't in church during the time that these statement were made. I did not hear such incendiary language myself, personally. Either in conversations with him or when I was in the pew, he always preached the social gospel. ... If I had heard them repeated, I would have quit. ... If I thought that was the repeated tenor of the church, then I wouldn’t feel comfortable there."

Talk about covering his butt. What does repeated mean? Twice, three times.

"In a phone call with Wright, Obama cited a Rolling Stone story, “The Radical Roots of Barack Obama," (the name of which has curiously been changed on the RS website) and told him, according to Wright, “You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what we’ve decided is that it’s best for you not to be out there in public.”

He's got some splaining (misspelled for effect) to do.

It seems to me, we are scraping the bottom of the barrel for a president ... kind of like "the end of the heating season, and all you have remaining is 'shale and rock' in your bin".

It's actually good that this has come out now. His speech today was courageous to the point of heroism. Unlike an ordinary politician would have, he refused to throw his pastor under the bus, saying that he could no more do that than disavow his own [white] grandmother, who's said some racially intolerant things. He basically said, "I'm bi-racial, and I understand -- and indeed embody -- the complexities, resentments, even anger, which is present in our still-racially-separated society. And I'll take my chances that people can rise above it; if they can't, it'll just be more of the same prejudices on both sides of the racial divide." The guy's the Derek Jeter of politics.

And who among us doesn't have a pastor, or uncle, or grandparent, or parent, some of whose statements could be used to embarrass us?

If it's the end of his candidacy, or of his presidential run, he will have done more today to elevate the level of discourse about race in this country than many presidents have accomplished in their entire careers.
