Stupid EFM

The air tube is also indexed with a roll pin. You'll see it next to the set screw on the side. Knock it out if you can and then you might be able to rotate the pot. As it is now, you'll have to pull the pot straight back about 3/8" before you can rotate it.

I used to disassemble the old assemblies that were laying on a pile outside for years to salvage used parts. You can usually get the pot off by using heat and hammering it. Sometimes I'd just cut the air tube and use an oxy/acetylene torch to get out the stub. It's very easy that way. It's even easier on the aluminum pipe because it tends to blow away.

I've never seen an old AF, but you might be able to get the bushing out by working underneath. I know on the boilers, it would be easy to install a bushing that way. If you could see, maybe you can slot to old bushing with a hacksaw blade to remove it.

i got the gooseneck bushing out and the new one installed.....then I took the whole fan/pot assembly to steve in ravine....he refurbishes efm stokers.......4 hrs later we got a new short pipe and steve got the set screws for the short pipe out of the burner pot and retapped the holes so I can install the new pipe......i gave up on trying to get the pot off lol.....my friend thain wired up a thermostat and a timer for me, so should be good to go in a little while, need he man here to help me put this monster back in and fire it up......i saw coalberner too......he was down there getting his short pipe off the burn pot

Yep lack of maintenance will cause alot of problems Scott you Must clean everthing at least Once every year and for the amount of coal your burning in it maybe twice a year

and yes I had to get the S.S. short Pipe out because the guy that had it before did not have the correct size pipe or the gas holes drilled in it or the two notches cut in it for the roll pins to stop the pipe from turning and it was not into the Pot shoulder all the way and it was missing one bolt and one broken off flush with the pot it was not that much Fun getting it out

it;s like brandy new now.........and I havent taken the ash out yet...only about 4" in there......no more efm stoking 24/7 for me.....i kinda miss the sound of the stoker but don't miss having to take ash out 2x a day and fill the barrel 2x a day and get coal every other week lol

are you talking about a 55 gallon Barrel?

What are you heating with your EFM? How much coal are you burning per month?

I believe it was because he didn't have a timer relay for off-demand days, which required 24/7 operation to keep it from going out. With the timer, the unit only runs about 3 minutes per half hour on warmer days.

i was running it 24/7 adjusting the feed between 2 and 6 clicks was hard to control temp........i was burning about 3 tons a month between the efm and the alaska....(the alaska is next to get modernized ) the timer I have was freebie value but it is a one hour timer.....it runs 10 minutes every hour to keep the fire lit I had it at 5 min but the fire went out in half the pot.....with the one hr timer it will need to be adjusted according to how much the stoker runs via the thermostat but I didnt have 379 bucks for the wil-burt timer.... ooh there goes the timer cycle.....so with about 70 bucks in new parts I was able to make it automatic......thermostat is set at 58 and the garage is 62 degrees.....much better now.....i havent taken ash out since it was refired saturday night yay!

so do you need to be burning all that coal or is it just b/c you don't have the proper timer?

Sounds like the $$ for the correct timer would pay for itself pretty quickly.

How big and how old is the house that your heating?

i didnt have a thermostat or a timer at all before the weekend......i'm heating a poorly insulated 40x80 garage with the efm I heat my 20x40 room with the alaska......figures I get the efm fixed and now the alaska dies again.......it is never ending

If you have outfires when it gets warmer, you can get a 30 minute timer from Grainger, but they don't hold up like the Wil-burt timers. Maybe with the AF you won't have that problem.

Is it the motor on the Alaska if so you should take it back to Reading stove & get a new one the motor is only a year old right

I ran mine at 2 minutes per hour and saved quite a bit of coal. I left it for a week and with no hot water demand the fire was still lit. I think 3min per 1/2 hour you can't go wrong but you could try less if you are willing to experiment and relight the sucker if it goes out.
