Cruise ship in Barrow AK

Cruise ship in Barrow AK

PostBy: Short Bus On: Wed Aug 19, 2015 2:03 am

I'm in Barrow working on some state equipment this week. I was riding the four wheeler to brunch with my sister and brother in law when I saw this, a cruise ship. First one ever in Barrow.

Mostly French passengers I'm told, they were bird watchers mostly. They were offering to rent your four wheeler right then right now.

The most interesting thing might be there was no customs people so no one to stamp their passports and such.

This is so cool! DK and I wanted to go to Barrow when we went to AK last year but the time and distance worked against it. I wonder if Barrow is going to be a regular port of call. Do you know what cruise line it was? Having been to all the "must see" spots we may be up for a slow boat to next to nowhere next time. :)

This is as for north as you can go and not get wet, 330 miles north of the arctic circle.

As for a cruse ship schedule, I don't think so, the one person I talked to complained they promised a lot like a stop at little Diomede, and something else, and they didn't deliver, but they did go north to the pack ice. This would be a difficult stop for a cruse ship since sometimes the wind has the pack ice jammed ashore most the summer.

Yesterday it was snowing, but none was sticking.

Looks like Arctic cruise plies the legendary northwest passage, but no one lists Barrow as a port of call.

An Alaska cruise is the only cruise that would interest me. If I remember correctly, they used to have a Chinese restaurant owner from Barrow on the Johnny Carson show??? Thanks for sharing with us!

Farthest north we made it was Coldfoot. We flew in to Anchorage and rented an RV for 2 weeks and drove all around. was a fun trip.

A few of my coworkers have been to Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay, we have a lot of compressor equipment up there.
