The ratchet system is because that door is also a check damper. It was a common feature on Magees. If you forget it and leave it open you will not be able to get the stove going till you remember it. I've done that.
Recast the grate system now. They are tough to find so save the original for next time. You will be very pleased with the construction of this unit. Everything is well thought out and the castings are exceptional. If you need anything just ask, I might have the needed parts in stock.
I emailed the pictures to Tomahawk and should have info soon on the recasting.
BTW- Its going to kill me to be in RI this weekend and not be able to visit your stove shop. I've been hoping to make it there for several years now.
