quick note to all, cleaned out boiler at end of year, aprilish, scraped, brushed, vacuum out, coated all with heavy layer of fluid film. left every thing open this year, bin off, blower off, smoke pipe off so air could get to it this year. went out in boiler room to check on things and was quite surprised, ton of flakey stuff in boiler, quick brush/scraping vaced out a pile of stuff, basically down to bare metal, and re oiled. next year plan a double clean?? real impressed how it looks now! :D :dancing: [rip,wn]

What precisely did you use to coat the surfaces?

I leave a 60 watt light bulb in mine all summer. Just enough heat to keep it nice & dry.

a product that's been around for a long time, it's called fluid film. awesome stuff!

Ah Hah... Fluid Film(TM), just like you said. Didn't recognize it. In environments where humidity is a concern, we do recommend a heat source, as Freddy indicated. Works great to limit off season corrosion. We have not engaged in testing products for treating the metal surfaces for mothballing the boiler during the summer.

the boiler is located outside in a ''boiler room'', not a damp basement but I do get condensation when crazy temp/humidity occurs. don't really want to pay for light bulb or possible fan to run for 24-7 from may till November fire up. I think I like what I see so far with leaving it open and coating with the fluid film. time will tell.

24-7 light bulb heat is overkill...a added thermostat or appliance timer can save some jing and still be effective against rust.

By my calculations, a 40 W light bulb runs for about 12 cents a day. This is generally quite adequate for keeping things dry inside. Your electric rates may be higher than mine.

Thanks for doing the math. :)

A lot of people shutter when anyone mentions burning a incandesant bulb 24/7.
I was trying to give them a thrifty feeling by hinting toward cycling the power to reduce consumption.
