Got 5 tons of Blashack delivered today. Looks like the best load of coal he has delivered so far. Did not look like there was much fines this year, the last two years had to be sifted to get the fines out.

I have lots of wood in storage for spring and fall. I do use wood in the cook stove this time of year until cold enough to switch to coal. All set for winter...let the snow flakes fly. Well, not just yet. toothy

Yeah, not just yet,......... especially since there's no such thing as, "getting a little bit of snow" up your way !!!! :D

Ya know the snow gets deep when there are a lot of houses around there with exterior doors on the second floor !

I burn them too, usually in the cook stove when I fix it for the night. I just want to keep heat out in the garage so nothing freezes so I put some of them on top of the coal to slow the fire down. Where it becomes a pain is when you run into them when it is below zero out and you just want to be inside. Screening them out is a PITA. I think I counted 5 - 5 gallon buckets full of them last year. The year before that there were 7 buckets, maybe he is getting better at this.

Nut, it is the largest size my supplier carries. Wish he carried Stove, would like to mix it.

Lookin' Good!! Ready for Winter.

Just curious....what are the dimensions of your bin and was there still coal in it from last year taking up space? It's future reference for all those questions to come about how big a bin is needed for 5 ton of coal. We can point to pics of your supply and say X size bin held 5 ton with a little mounded up!

I forget the actual dimensions right off hand but when I built it, I calculated it to hold 6 tons. There was still probably a little over a ton in there and I also have a over flow bin outside that probably holds 1/2 ton in it as well. I will get some measurements for you. I also seem to remember a thread on the forum on how to figure out how big a bin you need to hold your amount of coal.

Randy

Edit: Went out and got the dimensions: 4'6" high, 4'6" wide, 11' long. Originally, I made it a little higher but had to lower it some to get the conveyer in there for coal deliveries.

For building a bin, using 40 cubic feet per ton gives plenty of room, no matter what size coal is ordered. A bin that is 5 x 8 feet would store a ton for every foot of depth.

I made my first bin that way, so that I can just measure the depth and know how much coal I have remaining when ordering to refill.

On the suggestion of RichardS. When I got another stove, I added a 6 x 8 bin next to the 5 x 8 bin and took down half the wall between them so that both bins can be loaded from the one window. With a knee wall separating the two bins, I can use up the coal on one side of the knee wall, to clean fines out of the bottom, while still having months of coal left in the bin on the other side of the knee wall.
