I have been looking at new homes. One of the homes I am interested in has an existing pellet stove vent. Am I able to hook a Coal stoker up to this type of setup?

Not likely. And even if someone said you could, I wouldn't.

That is a big problem when a coal lover goes looking at new or newer houses, the chimneys are crap, if they even give you a chimney! If you go new, you can make a good chimney part of the deal. You don't want a house that you can't afford to heat just because a builder wants to jip you out of a chimney.

You can get a Keystoker direct vent. They use a 4" pipe, electric motor runs the draft. My son has a surdiac stove....4" pipe requires a chimney...you could run the pipe all the way up the out side of your house.... they don't need a lot of draft.

A direct vent is not a permanent solution for your home heating needs. On a new home I would insist on a masonry chimney.

Building a brand new house that you plan to heat with coal & not building a masonry chimney is like ordering a new heavy-duty dual wheel dump truck with a small 6 cylinder gas engine in it,when you plan to use the truck for heavy towing/hauling 90 % of the time. Build a new house ,build a new masonry chimney,it should last as long as the house. And plan the house around the centrally located chimney,it will impress all who see it for all its life. :)

Come on guys, he's not building a new house. He's looking at one that has an existing pellet stove with a 4 inch vent. And yes a Keystoker direct vent is 4 inch and they work just fine. I serviced them for about 2 years and never had a problem with the vent itself.

The main problem I had was people tweaking the coaltrol. At one location which was an AMVETS they had me build a cage to put around the feed control knob to keep prying fingers out. That solved all their problems.

4" vent will work with a direct vent stove. You will have to change the piping and use the manufacturer supplied vent but half the work is already done because someone already cut the hole in the side of the house for you!!! :D
