What I want to know is if I put a large coal stove in the basement. Right now I am leaning towards a DS Anthramax 16 or say a Glenwood Modern Oak 118 with a back pipe. Will the heat radiate up into the living area of the house without cutting holes for registers in the floors? I would have to check with the building dept and am reluctant to cut holes in the nice Oak floors.
There is a fireplace upstairs, I may put a Chubby Stove or an insert in it. I think it would be better to heat the basement with a large stove and let the heat rise plus I get the added advantage of the DHW Coil if it's a DS.
it will radiate upstairs but it helps to leave the basement door open, maybe use a fan to move it around, and of course floor registers always enhance it even more. you don't need a lot of registers, one in each room would be a good place to start
