I would also recommend a stove with an 18 inch firepot. That will give you the extra punch you need during the coldest parts of the year.

I've been heating my entire 2400 sf farmhouse (with VERY LITTLE insulation and a stone basement where you can see daylight) with just the 116. With good stove coal, I get 12 hr burns on the coldest days (Etna, ME). Our house is never balmy in the winter but it keeps us warm, none the less. The first winter, I didn't have the back pipe. What a difference it made when I finally found one!
For a newer 1800 sf house, I don't see why you'd have any problems staying very toasty with a 116. If you happen to find an 18" pot... scoop it up! I wouldn't go smaller or else you may have to tend it 3 x's/day during the cold snap.

Thanks I think I am leaning towards an Oak 30 with back pipe. I hope I'm able to locate one when the time comes. Otherwise I will probably go with a Chubby Blower Model.

Call Barnstable and/or Bryant's in Maine. Maybe Emery has one. Have you talked to the Antique Stove Hospital yet?ASea wrote:Thanks I think I am leaning towards an Oak 30 with back pipe. I hope I'm able to locate one when the time comes. Otherwise I will probably go with a Chubby Blower Model.
A Glenwood Oak 30 is an absolutely beautiful and efficient stove. You will be happy with it.

William I have been holding off till I close on the house in October.I didn't want to jerk anyones chain until I am absolutely certain we own the home and have signed papers. I have to get those fireplace measurements so I can get the back pipe just right. Do you think an Oak 30 would be out of place in a 1959 Ranch style home?

No, it wouldn't be out of place. It depends on how you decorate. Sometimes an eclectic contrast is just what the room needs.

I called Bryant today and they have nothing for Coal Parlor Stoves."We don't even have anything in the back that could be restored" I was very disappointed. What stinks is they post pictures on line that make it seem as though they do. Emery at the Stove Hospital did mention he may have something and that he would get back to me. Hey if I can't find the Antique Stove I want I can always pick up a Chubby which is a very nice stove and has some of the nice characteristics of the older stoves.

I understand that I am admittedly late in the season mainly due to the fact that I am reluctant to make a purchase until we have actually closed on our new house.
Something to be said for a brand new Coal Chubby. Wonder if anyone has ever fitted a back pipe to one?

We close on the house this Friday as a matter of fact. The Chimney is going to need some work and I can't get the damper open. I think when all is said and done I will probably just try and find a used Coal Chubby for a few hundred dollars and see how that goes. I would love to have a nice antique stove but right now my budget is very tight.
